Copper Overview

Copper is a new item in Minecraft 1.17. In Minecraft Caves & Cliffs Update Part I, Copper comes in different types and forms. It also serves as an ingredient to make other items.

  1. Copper Ore.
  2. Raw Copper.
  3. Copper Ingot.
  4. Block of Raw Copper.
  5. Block of Copper (Waxed, Exposed, Weathered, and Oxidized).
  6. Spyglass.
  7. Lighting Rod.

Let’s get into all these items one by one. The first is Copper Ore.

Copper Ore is one of the types of Ores that players can find. They are easy to find, as easy as finding Coals.

Copper Ore drops Raw Copper if the player destroys it using a Stone Picaxe or Higher. The player can also increase the drop count by using Fortune Enchanted Pickaxe.

Blast Furnace Smelting Raw Copper

Raw Copper can be either crafted into Blocks of Raw Copper or smelted into Copper Ingot. Players can either use Blast Furnace or the regular Furnace.

Copper Ingot serves as an ingredient for these items:

1. Lightning Rod

It’s a block that diverts lightning into the ground. You can place it on top of your house or your crop field.

If you place it on land in certain areas, it minimizes the chances of you and other mobs getting struck by lightning (even though it’s very rare to happen) and the chances of spawning the Skeleton Trap.

2. Spyglass

With Spyglass, you can zoom in on places from far away. However, the view of the area when you zoom in is quite small. It’s way better with Optifine on Minecraft Java, in my opinion.

3. Copper Block

The Copper Block is a block made of 9 Copper Ingots. It currently serves as decorative blocks. What makes this block unique is that it oxidizes over time. The Copper Block’s color will become a blueish or teal-like color.

There are four stages of oxidation in Minecraft.

Copper Block > Exposed Copper > Weathered Copper > Oxidized Copper.

There are two differences between Copper Block and Oxidized Copper Block. First, the Copper Block can be crafted back into 9 Copper Ingots while Oxidized Copper Block can’t. Second, the color is changing (obviously).

Here are things you can do to make Oxidized Copper return to normal.

Scrapping Oxidized Copper using an Axe

1. Use Axe. Click the Exposed, Weathered, or Oxidized Copper to return it to normal. You will see particles from the Copper Block while you’re doing this.

Waxing Copper using Honeycomb

2 . Use Honeycomb. Honeycomb prevents Copper Block to become Oxidized over time (so it stays as it is). This method is called waxing. To remove the wax, use Axe. Note: keep in mind that, Exposed, Weathered, and Oxidized Copper can also be waxed using a Honeycomb. But why would you want to wax Oxidized Copper Block?

3. Place the Lightning Rod on top of the Oxidized Copper Block and wait for a lightning strike. A lightning strike that hits an Oxidized Copper Block will turn it into Copper Block (as well as other blocks near it). But this method seems inefficient.
