Potion of Poison Overview

All Potion of Poisons, with its status effect icon.

Potion of Poison is a Potion that has a negative effect. The effect is Poison. It reduces 1 Health (a half Heart) overtime. 

• Poison (level 1) decreases 1 Health (a half Heart) for every 1.25 seconds.
• Poison II decreases 1 Health (a half Heart) for every 0.625 seconds.

With this effect, this kind of Potion should be thrown at mobs or opponents.

Keep in mind that the Potion of Poison has two durations. The first one is for how long the Poison effect will last. And the second is for how often the affected one gets damage.

For example, basic Potion of Poison (00:45) will decrease 1 HP (a half Heart) for every 1.25 seconds. 45 divided by 1.25 equals 36 (18 Hearts). So, over time the affected one’s HP would decrease up to 36 (18 Hearts) if not cured. 

The Poison effect won’t reduce health below 1 (a half Heart). Undead Mobs and Spiders are unaffected by the Poison effect.

If you got a Poison effect, whether it’s from Bees or a Witch, drink Milk. Milk can remove any Potion effects (whether it’s negative or positive) at once.

How to Make the Potion

Before making Potion of Poison, make sure you make Awkward Potions first by putting Nether Wart and Water Bottles into the Brewing Stand.

Notes: 

1. When Brewing any Potions, make sure you put three Potions (or Water Bottles, if you try to make Awkward Potions) for the Output. 
2. There are three types of Potions you can make. The first one is the basic, the second one (with + at the end of its name) comes extended duration, and level II (with increased effect power and lower time). 
3. In-game, the extended and upgraded Potion doesn’t come with + and II at the end of its name. Both are marks to lets you differentiate each Potion.

To make the basic Potion of Poison, put Spider Eye and Awkward Potions into the Brewing Stand. The Potion of Poison comes with Poison (level 1) and a duration of 45 seconds.

To make Potion of Poison +. Put Redstone and basic Potion of Poison. Potion of Poison + comes with Poison (level 1) and, the duration varies depending on Minecraft Edition you have. For Java: 01:30 seconds and for Bedrock: 2 minutes.

Now, to make Potion of Poison II. Put Glowstone and basic Potion of Poison. The Potion of Poison II comes with Poison II and, the duration is slightly varies depending on Minecraft Edition. For Java: 21 seconds and for Bedrock: 22 seconds.

To make the basic Splash Potion of Poison. Put Gunpowder and basic Potion of Poison into the Brewing Stand. Splash Potion of Poison comes with Poison (level 1) and, the duration varies depending on Minecraft Edition you have. For Java: 45 seconds and for Bedrock: 33 seconds.

3. Lingering Potion of Poison

To make the basic Lingering Potion of Poison. Put Dragon’s Breath and Splash Potion of Poison. The Lingering Potion of Poison comes with Poison (level 1) and a duration of 11 seconds.

To make Lingering Potion of Poison +. Put Dragon’s Breath and Splash Potion of Poison +. The Lingering Potion of Poison + comes with Poison (level 1) and duration that varies depending Minecraft Edition you have. For Java: 22 seconds and for Bedrock: 30 seconds.

Now, to make Lingering Potion of Poison II. Put Dragon’s Breath and Splash Potion of Poison II. The Lingering Potion of Poison II comes with Poison II and a duration of 5 seconds.

When Lingering Potion is thrown, the lingering effect will last up to 26 seconds. The durations you see above (11 seconds, 22/30 seconds, and 5 seconds) are for the Poison effect and not how long lingering particles will last.
