The Dye is an item used to give color to various items in Minecraft. There are 16 colors of Dyes in Minecraft. Each Dye can be applied to:
- Wolf’s Collar
- Cat’s Collar
- Banner
- Banner Pattern
- Firework Star
- Bed
- Carpet
- Wool
- Concrete
- Concrete Powder
- Shulker Box
- Leather Armor
- Leather Horse Armor
- Terracotta
- Glass
- Glass Pane
There are different ways to obtain Dye in Minecraft. But most Dyes come from flowers. Some Dye may require other Dyes as an ingredient. Each item’s color will reflect the Dye color.
Crafting all Dyes requires a maximum of four crafting slots. It means you don’t even need Crafting Table to make them. You can make them right in your hands.
Black Dye
There are two ingredients you can use to make Black Dye:
- Ink Sac.
- Wither Rose.
You only can get Ink Sac from killing Squid. However, if you play Minecraft Bedrock, there is a chance that Wandering Trader offering you 3 Ink Sacs for 1 Emerald.
Wither Rose generates when a non-undead mob is killed by Wither.
Black Dye is the part ingredient to make Gray Dye and Light Gray Dye.
Blue Dye
There are two ingredients you can use to make Blue Dye:
- Lapis Lazuli.
- Cornflower.
You can get Lapis Lazuli by mining Lapis Lazuli Ore directly, buy it from Cleric for 1 Emerald for each, or wining the raid and get Hero of the Village status effects. The Cleric may throw you Lapis Lazuli for that.
In Minecraft Bedrock, Wandering Trader may offer you 3 Lapis Lazuli for 1 Emerald.
You can find Cornflower in the Plains or Flower Forests. Wandering Trader may offer you Cornflower for 1 Emerald.
Blue Dye is the part ingredient to make Purple Dye, Cyan Dye, Light Blue Dye, and Magenta Dye.
Brown Dye
The only ingredient for crafting Brown Dye is Cocoa Beans.
You can get Cocoa Beans from Cocoa Pod. Just destroy Cocoa Pod with hand or Ax, and the Cocoa Beans will drop right away. Cocoa Pod can be found in the Jungle, and they generate on trees.
In Minecraft Bedrock, Wandering Trader may offer you 3 Cocoa Beans for 1 Emerald.
Cyan Dye
The only way to get Cyan Dye is by combining Green Dye with Blue Dye.
This method is similar in painting and other coloring stuff. The idea is to get new colors from 2 or more different colors when combined. Like Red combined with Blue, you got Purple.
Gray Dye
To get Gray Dye, you need to combine Black Dye with White Dye.
Gray Dye is the part ingredient to make Light Gray Dye.
Green Dye
The only way to get Green Dye is by smelting Cactus. Keep in mind that smelting Cactus can be done through a regular Furnace, not Smoker.
Cactus can be found mainly in the Badlands and the Desert. Try to destroy Cactus using Ax. Wandering Trader may offer you Cactus for 3 Emeralds.
Green Dye is the part ingredient to make Cyan Dye and Lime Dye.
Light Blue Dye
There are two ways to make Light Blue Dye:
- Craft it using Blue Orchid.
- Combine Blue Dye with White Dye.
You can only find Blue Orchid in the Swamp (the same biome where Witch Hut generated). Wandering Trader may offer you Blue Orchid for 1 Emerald.
Light Gray Dye
Light Gray has the most ways to make it. There are five different ways:
- Craft it using: Azure Bluet, White Tulip, or Oxeye Daisy.
- Combine Gray Dye with White Dye.
- Combine 1 Black Dye with 2 White Dyes.
You can find Azure Bluet, White Tulip, and Oxeye Daisy mainly in plains or Flower Forest. Wandering Trader may offer you one of those flowers for 1 Emerald each.
Lime Dye
There are two ways to get Lime Dye:
- Combine Green Dye white White Dye.
- Smelt Sea Pickle.
You cannot use Smoker to smelt Sea Pickle, only regular Furnace. Sea Pickles can be found in warm and lukewarm Oceans. Wandering Trader may offer you Sea Pickle for 2 Emeralds.
Magenta Dye
There are four different ways to get Magenta Dye:
- Craft it using Allium.
- Craft it using Lilac.
- Combine Purple Dye with Pink Dye.
- Combine 2 Red Dyes, Blue Dye, and White Dye.
Allium only generates in Flower Forest. on the other hand, Lilac generates in the Forest, Birch Forest, Roofed Forest, and Flower Forest.
Wandering Trader in Minecraft Bedrock may offer you Allium or Lilac for 1 Emerald each. In Minecraft Java Edition, Wandering Trader only offering you Allium for 1 Emerald.
Orange Dye
There are two ways to obtain Orange Dye:
- Craft it from Orange Tulip.
- Combine Red Dye with Yellow Dye.
Orange Tulip generates in Plains and Flower Forest. Wandering Trader may offer you Orange Tulip for 1 Emerald.
Pink Dye
There are three ways to get Pink Dye:
- Craft it using Pink Tulip.
- Craft it using Peony.
- Combine Red Dye with White Dye.
Pink Tulip generates in Plains and Flower Forest. on the other hand, Peony generates in the Forest, Birch Forest, Roofed Forest, and Flower Forest.
Wandering Trader in Minecraft Bedrock may offer you Pink Tulip or Peony for 1 Emerald each. In Minecraft Java Edition, Wandering Trader only offering you Pink Tulip for 1 Emerald.
Pink Dye is the part ingredient to make Magenta Dye.
Purple Dye
The only way to get Purple Dye is by combining Red Dye with Blue Dye.
Purple Dye is the part ingredient to make Magenta Dye.
Red Dye
There are four ingredients to make Red Dye:
- Poppy.
- Red Tulip.
- Beetroot.
- Rose Bush.
Poppy is a common flower that generates in Plains, Forest, Birch Forest, Roofed Forest, and Flower Forest. Poppy is also dropped by the Iron Golem (0 – 2) when it dies. But I don’t think it’s worth it to kill an Iron Golem for a Poppy.
Red Tulip generates in Plains and Flower Forest.
Rose Bush generates in Forest, Birch Forest, Roofed Forest, and Flower Forest.
There is a chance that Farmers in the Village plant Beetroot in their crop field. Wandering Trader may offer you Beetroot Seeds for 1 Emerald.
In Minecraft Bedrock, Wandering Trader may offer you Poppy, Red Tulip, or Rose Bush for 1 Emerald each.
In Minecraft Java, Wandering Trader won’t offer you Rose Bush, only Poppy or Red Tulip for 1 Emerald.
Red Dye is the part ingredient to make Purple Dye, Pink Dye, Magenta Dye, and Orange Dye.
White Dye
There are two ingredients to make White Dye:
- Bone Meal.
- Lily of the Valey.
You can get Bone Meal from Composter (see: how to use Composter) or craft it from Bone to get 3 Bone Meals. Wandering Trader in Minecraft Bedrock may offer you 3 Bone Meals for 1 Emerald.
Lily of the Valley generates in Forest, Birch Forest, Roofed Forest, and Flower Forest. Wandering Trader may offer you Lily of the Valley for 1 Emerald.
In Minecraft Java, Wandering Trader may offer you 3 White Dyes for 1 Emerald.
White Dye is the part ingredient to make Light Gray Dye, Gray Dye, Pink Dye, Lime Dye, Light Blue Dye, and Magenta Dye.
Yellow Dye
There are two ingredients to make Yellow Dye:
- Dandelion.
- Sunflower.
Dandelion is a very common flower found in every grass-covered biome. While Sunflower only generates in Sunflower Plains.
In Minecraft Bedrock, Wandering Trader may offer you Dandelion or Sunflower for 1 Emerald. In Minecraft Java, Wandering Trader won’t offer you Sunflower.
Yellow Dye is the part ingredient to make Orange Dye.
The Importance of Wandering Trader in Collecting Dyes
As you read the article, you must’ve read “Wandering Trader may offer you…” million times. That because Wandering Trader offers most of the ingredients of Dyes.
If you play Minecraft Bedrock, Wandering Trader may even be offering you 3 Red, Yellow, Orange, Lime, Green, Cyan, Light Blue, Purple, Magenta, Pink, Gray, or Light Gray Dye for 1 Emerald.
