So, here are the Pickaxe Enchantments
Curse of Vanishing
This Enchantment makes your Pickaxe disappear if you die instead of dropping on the ground. This Enchantment considered a “Curse” because of its effect.
You surely don’t want this Enchantment.
Curse of Vanishing can only be obtained through the Chest. You can’t get this Enchantment from the Enchanting Table.
Curse of Vanishing is compatible with other Enchantments and only has 1 level.
Efficiency can increase your mining speed (make you destroy blocks faster). Shovel, Ax, and Shears can also have this Enchantment. But you’re going to make sure you break the block using the proper tool. If you don’t, then the Efficiency will do nothing.
For example, you have Pickaxe with Efficiency, and you try to break a Wood Log, you won’t get the effect.
Efficiency has levels from 1 – 5 and compatible with other Enchantments.
Fortune increases the number of drop items and chances to get them. It mostly affects on ore items. For example, when you mine a Diamond Ore, there are chances you get multiple Diamonds.
That effect makes Fortune a must-have Enchantment for Pickaxe.
Fortune has levels from 1 – 3 and incompatible with Silk Touch.
Mending makes items repairable using XP. So, when you use Pickaxe for mining Coal Ore-for example, the XP goes to your Pickaxe. In other words, it increases the durability of an item using XP.
You need to hold the item while collecting the XP to make it work.
Other enchantable items can have this Enchantment too.
Mending considered a “Treasure” Enchantment, the opposite of a “Curse” Enchantment.
Just like the Curse of Vanishing, you can’t get it directly from the Enchanting Table. But you got other options: you can get it from Chest, fishing, or trade from the Librarian.
Mending has only 1 level and incompatible with Infinity (Bow’s Enchantment).
Silk Touch makes the block drop the actual block itself.
For example, when you break a Diamond Ore using a Pickaxe, you will get a Diamond. But when you break a Diamond Ore using a Pickaxe enchanted with Silk Touch, you will get actual Diamond Ore itself.
You can also break a Glass Block and still get it using Silk Touch and moving Bee Nest/Beehive safely while the Bees remain inside (see Bee Farming Tips).
Shovel and Ax also can have Silk Touch.
Silk Touch only has 1 level and incompatible with Fortune.
Unbreaking increases the item’s durability. Any other enchantable item can also have Unbreaking.
Unbreaking has levels from 1 – 3 and compatible with other Enchantments.
Which Pickaxe Enchantments Should You Pick?
Because there are only 2 Enchantments that incompatible with each other (Fortune and Silk Touch), and Fortune is far better than the Silk Touch. Make your Pickaxe (especially Netherite Pickaxe) like this:
Fortune + Efficiency + Mending + Unbreaking
Fortune is a must-have for the Pickaxe you don’t want to sacrifice it with Silk Touch, it’s not worth it (generally speaking).
Efficiency also important you can break blocks faster and work faster.
Mending can repair your Pickaxe using XP while mining ores (if you don’t mind the XP). It would be great, especially if your Pickaxe has Fortune and Efficiency.
Last but not least, Unbreaking. It works well when combined with the above Enchantments. Your Pickaxe will be durable.
Obtaining those Enchantments can be tough and required a lot of times, so here are my tips:
- Before you enchant your Picaxe, make sure the Enchanting Table is fully optimized (properly surrounded by Bookshelves).
- Try to enchant books instead. Books give you more Enchantments to choose from.
- Try XP farming in Dungeon or Nether Fortress.
- Try Mine Nether Quartz. It has many XP compared to ore blocks.
Keep in mind, that all this just my suggestion to pick Enchantments that I think great for Pickaxe. You can still select Pickaxe Enchantments the way you want. It’s up to you.
